    Word Originlate Middle English: via Latin from Greek hermaphroditos. Hermaphroditus was the son of Hermes and Aphrodite in Greek mythology. The nymph Salmacis fell in love with him and prayed to be united with him forever. They became joined as one body but kept characteristics of both sexes.
