  1. the fourth largest US city and the largest in Texas, named after Sam Houston. It is a financial, commercial, cultural and industrial centre, especially for the oil industry. The city is also a major port connected to the Gulf of Mexico by the Houston Ship Canal. It has two major universities, Rice University and the University of Houston, and the Lyndon B Johnson Space Center is also there.
