- one of the four big clearing banks in Britain, with branches in towns and cities all over the country. It was established in Hong Kong in 1865 as the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. In 1992 it bought the Midland Bank, which was established in Birmingham in 1836, and it is now one of the largest banks in the world.
