- a US state in the Middle West. Its popular name is the Hawkeye State, and people from Iowa are called Hawkeyes, probably after Chief Black Hawk, a leader of the Sauk tribe. Iowa was part of the Louisiana Purchase and became a state in 1846. Iowa is known for its agriculture, and it is the largest producer of corn, soya beans, and pigs in the US. Des Moines is the capital and largest city.
