  1. (1878-1927) a US dancer who helped to develop modern dance. She was influenced especially by ancient Greek art and often danced in bare feet, wearing a loose tunic. She worked mostly in Europe, and started schools of dance in Berlin, Moscow, Vienna and Salzburg. Her life was very tragic: her Russian husband killed himself, her children were killed in a car accident, and she herself died when her long shawl became caught in the wheel of her car and strangled her.
