James Monroe

- (1758-1831) the fifth US President. He is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine, which aimed to keep new European interests out of the Americas. He fought in the American Revolution and helped to establish the Democratic Republican Party. He was elected as a US Senator (1790-94) and twice as governor of Virginia (1799-1802 and 1811). His time as President was called the 'Era of Good Feeling'. He bought Florida from Spain in 1819, settled a dispute with Britain over the US–Canadian border, and signed the Missouri Compromise.
