  1. (1938-2016) the first woman to become US Attorney General. She held this position from (1993-2001), the longest period for an Attorney General in the twentieth century. She was criticized for giving approval for the attack in 1993 on the Branch Davidians led by David Koresh in Waco, Texas, and in 2000 she ordered the controversial arrest of the young Elián González so that he could be returned to his father in Cuba. In 2002 she competed to become the governor of Florida but she was not successful.
