  1. (1913-80) an African American athlete who won four gold medals (for running and the long jump) at the 1936 Olympic Games in Germany. This was said to have annoyed Adolf Hitler because it did not fit with his ideas about race. Owens later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his achievements.
