  1. (c. 1514-72) a Scottish Protestant leader. He began his career as a Roman Catholic priest but became a Protestant at the time of the Reformation. Because of his beliefs he was forced to live abroad for much of his life, and he met John Calvin in Geneva. When he returned to Scotland in 1559 he led the opposition to the Roman Catholic Mary, Queen of Scots, and spent the rest of his life establishing the Church of Scotland.
