  1. (1932-2003) a US singer and writer of country music. He was called 'The Man in Black' because he often wore black clothes. His successful songs include I Walk the Line (1956) and A Boy Named Sue (1969). He received many Grammy awards, including one in 1994 for the album American Recordings. His wife June Carter was also a country music singer as is his daughter Roseanne.
