- (1743-1820) an English naturalist who sailed with Captain Cook on his first journey round the world. He discovered and collected many unknown plants, especially in Australia, and helped to start the famous collection of plants at Kew Gardens. He was President of the Royal Society for over 40 years and was made a knight in 1781.
