  1. the administrative centre of Lincolnshire, in the east of England. It was originally a Roman city and has several important Roman remains. It also contains many beautiful medieval buildings, including a castle, begun in 1068, and a famous cathedral with three spires (= pointed towers), built mainly between the 11th and 14th centuries. The city has one of Britain's newest universities, opened in 1996.
