  1. born Louis Mountbatten (1900-79) a British admiral who during the Second World War commanded the Allied forces in South-East Asia. He was the last viceroy of India before it became independent, and remained there for a year as its first Governor General. He was killed while sailing off the west coast of Ireland by a bomb put on his boat by the IRA. Lord Mountbatten was a great- grandson of Queen Victoria, and the uncle of Prince Charles.
