- (1900-71) a famous US jazz musician and leader of a band. His popular name was 'Satchmo', a short form of 'Satchelmouth', because of his large mouth. He played the trumpet and sang with a rough voice. He appeared in more than 50 films and performed around the world as a special representative of the US State Department. Many people think he was the greatest of all jazz musicians.
