- the name of a series of flights of NASA spacecraft that went past or around other planets. Mariner 1 failed and was destroyed in flight in 1962, but in the same year Mariner 2 flew past Venus. Mariner 9 went into orbit around the planet Mars in 1971 and took more than 7 000 photographs. Mariner 10 flew past Venus and Mercury in 1974 and again in 1975.
