  1. a type of circular stone tower, about 40 feet/12 metres high, built in Britain in the early 19th century. The purpose of the towers was to defend the south coast of England against possible attack by the French during the Napoleonic Wars, and each could contain a group of soldiers. About 25 of the towers still exist.
