  1. an eastern state of the US on the Atlantic Ocean. It is also known as the Old Line State and the Free State. The largest city is Baltimore, and the capital city is Annapolis. Maryland was one of the original 13 states and gave some of its land to create Washington, DC. Tourists visit the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the Goddard Space Flight Center.
