  1. a US television series on PBS showing many of the best British programmes. It was formerly known as Masterpiece Theater. It began in 1971 and was presented by Alistair Cooke until 1994. The programmes have included Upstairs, Downstairs (1974-7), The Jewel in the Crown (1984) and recently Downton Abbey (from 2011).
