  1. (1920-2014) a US actor known for his cheerful personality. He began as a child actor and first became famous in the late 1930s as the film character Andy Hardy. He then made several films with Judy Garland. His film successes included Babes in Arms (1939), The Human Comedy (1943) and The Black Stallion (1979). Rooney later had more success in the Broadway musical play Sugar Babies (1978-81). He received a special Oscar in 1983.
