  1. a state in the northern central US on the Canadian border. It has more than 10 000 lakes, and is also called the North Star State and the Gopher State. The largest city is Minneapolis and the capital city is St Paul. It became a state in 1858. Minnesota produces a large percentage of the country's iron ore, as well as farming products, machinery and computers. The Mayo Clinic, a famous medical centre, is in Rochester.
