  1. a south-western US state on the Mexican border, also called the Land of Enchantment. The largest city is Albuquerque, and the capital city is Santa Fe. It became part of the US in 1848 after the Mexican War, and a state in 1912. The first atomic bomb was exploded at Alamogordo, New Mexico, in 1945. The state produces many minerals, including uranium, gold and silver, as well as oil and gas. Its tourist attractions include Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands National Monument.
