  1. (1898-1993) a US religious leader who wrote The Power of Positive Thinking (1952), one of the most successful 'self-help' books, advising people how to improve the quality of their lives. He also had radio and television programmes, and wrote regularly in newspapers and magazines. He was the leader of the Marble Collegiate Reformed Church in New York (1932-84). His other books include The Art of Living (1948) and Power of the Positive Factor (1987).
