  1. (1933-2015) an English neurologist (= doctor who studies the nerves and their diseases) who wrote many books about unusual mental conditions. He lived in New York from 1960, where he worked as a professor of neurology. His book Awakenings (1973) about a 'sleeping sickness' was made into a 1990 film with Robin Williams . His other books include The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (1985) and An Anthropologist on Mars (1995).
