- the capital and largest city in the US state of Arizona. It is on the Salt River in central Arizona and has a warm, dry climate that attracts tourists. It is a centre for agricultural products and information technology. Phoenix became a city in 1881 and the capital of the Arizona Territory in 1889. It received the Bertelsmann Foundation Award in 1993 as the best managed city in the world.
