- a member of a group of British nineteenth-century artists who painted in a style similar to Italian artists of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, before the time of RaphaelCultureThe group of Pre-Raphaelites included John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt (who formed what they called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood). Other artists associated with the group included William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. Their subjects were usually from literature or the Bible, and were painted in bright colours with realistic detail.
