  1. any of a chain of sandwich shops started in London in 1986 by Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham, which sell sandwiches that are made in the shops, as well as drinks and other food items that customers can eat in the shop or take away. There are now Pret shops all over the UK as well as in the US, Hong Kong and Paris. The name, meaning ready to eat is based on the French expression prêt à porter (ready to wear).
