  1. (1759-96) a Scottish poet, often referred to as Robbie (or Rabbie) Burns. He wrote many poems and songs in English, and in the dialect of Lowland Scotland, about love, the countryside, the life of working people, and his love of Scotland. He is regarded as Scotland's national poet and his poems and songs, such as Tam o' Shanter and Auld Lang Syne, are widely known.
