  1. the name under which the English author Hector Hugh Munro (1870-1916) wrote his short stories. These are often about upper-class English life, and are humorous in a clever and sometimes cruel way. His collections of short stories include Beasts and Superbeasts (1914), and he also wrote three novels. He was killed in the First World War.
