  1. (1915-2005) a US writer of novels, born in Canada. His books often relate to his Jewish background and many are very humorous. They include The Adventures of Augie March (1953), Herzog (1964), Humboldt's Gift (1975) for which he won the Pulitzer Prize, and Ravelskin (2000). He was given the Nobel Prize for literature in 1976.
