  1. a board game in which players try to make words from letters printed on small plastic blocks and connect them to words that have already been placed on the board
    CultureScrabble was invented in the US in the 1930s by Alfred Butts, who first called it 'Lexiko' and then 'Criss Cross Words'. It became Scrabble in 1948. It became very popular in the 1960s, and there are now Scrabble clubs and national competitions in both Britain and the US.
