  1. a town in central Scotland. It has an important place in Scottish history. It has a very old castle where the kings and queens of Scotland used to live. Scottish forces defeated the English in two important battles, Stirling Bridge (1297) and the Battle of Bannockburn, for control of the castle and the bridge across the Forth river. It is also the administrative centre of the Stirling council area, which covers a wider area than the town, including part of the Grampians.
