  1. an important art gallery on the north bank of the Thames in central London. It contains the main national collections of British art from 1500 to the present. It is especially well known for its collection of works by Turner. Before Tate Modern opened in 2000, the building and its collection were called the Tate Gallery and contained both British and international art.
