  1. (in US politics) , the popular name for the States' Rights Party, a 'third party' that competed in the 1948 election for US President against the Democratic Party and Republican Party. It was formed to support states' rights. The candidate was J Strom Thurmond, who won five states in the South with 39 votes in the Electoral College.
