  1. a large, low, wet region in the southern part of the US state of Florida. Some Seminole people still live there. There are alligators and many varieties of birds and snakes there. Its area is about 5 000 square miles/12 950 square kilometres. Dry weather has recently damaged parts of the Everglades, and there is concern about the region's future. The Everglades national park was created in 1947 and made a World Heritage Site in 1979.
