  1. a book (1937) written by J R R Tolkien. The book is set in the imaginary world of Middle Earth. In the book, hobbits are small, friendly creatures with big feet. The main character, a hobbit called Bilbo Baggins, becomes involved in an adventure involving dragons, dwarves and wizards. Many of the same characters appear again in the book The Lord of the Rings (1954-5). The Hobbit is popular with both children and adults in many countries around the world. It was made into three films between 2012 and 2014.
