[plural]- the general name given to the various armed conflicts between native North American people and people who came to North American later, mostly from Europe, and their descendants. These battles began at Jamestown in 1622. The great Indian wars in the West were in the 1870s, with the final major battle in 1890 at Wounded Knee in South Dakota.
