  1. an organization established in 1788 at Burlington House, London, for the scientific study of plants and animals. It was named after Carolus Linnaeus (1707-78), a Swedish scientist who invented a system for naming living things, and whose library and scientific collections are kept by the Society. The Society publishes several scientific journals.
