  1. a district of New York City in south-east Manhattan. It includes Little Italy around Mulberry Street, Chinatown, with Canal Street at its centre, and the Jewish area around Hester Street. Many people from Puerto Rico have come to live there more recently. Much of the Lower East Side was built again in the 1930s under Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.
