  1. a famous US art museum in New York, first opened in 1880. The building has about 250 rooms and more than 3.5 million works of art from around the world, including the complete Temple of Dendur from Egypt. The museum's American Wing includes, as well as paintings, 25 rooms furnished to show the development of furniture and design from the early colonial period to the 20th century. Much of the medieval art is at the Cloisters, a separate building in Fort Tryon Park, opened in 1938.
