- any of several awards given each year by New York theatre critics (= newspaper and magazine writers who give their opinions about plays performed). The awards were first given for the 1935-36 season by members of the New York Drama Critics Circle. Winning productions have included Arcadia (1995) by Tom Stoppard and Billy Elliot the Musical (2009) by Elton John and Lee Hall.
