  1. in the past, one of Britain's most important trade unions, both in size and influence. It represented several different groups of workers, including transport workers, engineers, and factory and office workers. It was established in 1922, when 14 separate trade unions joined together. In 2007 it became part of the new union Unite. The TGWU had strong links with the Labour Party.
