  1. a crime novel (1932) by the US writer Dashiell Hammett in which he created the married couple of Nick and Nora Charles. They solved crimes together and often discussed them in a humorous way. It was made into a film (1934) with William Powell and Myrna Loy, which was so successful that five more were made. Although the 'thin man' of the original book title was murdered, most people assumed from the titles of the films that it referred to Nick Charles.
