  1. a university in London, started in 1836. It consists of a large number of colleges in different parts of the city, including the London School of Economicsand University College, London. These colleges and institutions have a lot of independence. London was the first university in Britain to admit women to its degree courses, in 1878. Students of the University of London around the world study and take examinations in their own countries as part of the International Programmes.
