  1. a US rock group that had no big commercial hits but influenced many later groups and singers, including David Bowie. Their albums included The Velvet Underground and Nico (1967), White Light/White Heat (1967), The Velvet Underground (1969) and Loaded (1970). The group broke up in 1971 and formed again for a short time in the 1990s.
