  1. a famous and fashionable New York hotel on Park Avenue. The Waldorf Hotel and the Astor Hotel, located where the Empire State Building now stands, were opened separately by different members of the rich Astor family in the late 19th century. They combined in 1931 in the present building, designed in the art deco style.
