- one of the main characters in The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Toad (an animal like a frog) is a very lively character who owns a big house. He becomes very enthusiastic about cars but is sent to prison for driving in a dangerous way. He escapes dressed as a woman and is then helped by his friends to get back into his home, which has been captured by his enemies.
