- (1721-71) a Scottish writer of novels. His early books, The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748) and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751) describe the travels and often rough adventures of characters who are not always honest but are easy to like. Smollett's other major work, The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), is in the form of letters.
