    Word Originearly 17th cent. (originally referring to the naturally alcoholic sap of some kinds of palm, drunk in tropical countries): from Marathi (a language spoken in the western Indian state of Maharashtra) tāḍī, Hindi tāṛī, from Sanskrit tād̲ī ‘palmyra’ (a type of palm tree).
