  1. (1947-2013) a popular US writer of novels about spies and military operations by the US government. Many have Jack Ryan of the CIA as the main character. Clancy's books are known for their technical details. They include The Hunt for Red October (1984), Patriot Games (1987), Clear and Present Danger (1989), Executive Orders (1996) and Battle Ready (2004). Several have been made into films.
