- (1778-1830) an English writer and critic, best known for his essays and lectures. He expressed strong, often harsh, opinions, especially about other writers. His best-known works include Characters of Shakespeare's Plays (1817-18), Table Talk (1821) and The Spirit of the Age (1825).
